Long report, school handbook, user manual or policy document? AI chat apps can read a PDF and give you the key points in about a minute. Here’s how, and how to check the summary.
Most popular AI chat apps let you attach a PDF right in the chat box. Look for a + or a paperclip next to where you type:
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot all accept PDF uploads on the web and in their phone apps. Free plans may limit file size or how many files you can upload a day.
Your PDF reader may have AI built in. Adobe Acrobat offers an AI Assistant (a paid add-on), and the Copilot button in Microsoft Edge can summarize a PDF you have open.
Features and limits change often and vary by plan and country, so check the app’s help page if you don’t see the option.
Summarize a PDF in five steps
1
Check what’s inside
If the PDF has medical, tax or account details, think twice before uploading it. See the safety tips below.
2
Attach the file
Open your AI app, tap + or the paperclip, and choose the PDF from your files.
3
Paste the prompt
Use the summary prompt below. Asking for page numbers makes the summary much easier to check.
4
Ask follow-ups
“What does it say about refunds?” or “Explain section 3 simply.” You can keep asking about the same file.
5
Check what matters
For anything important, like a date, an amount or a rule, open the PDF at that page and read it yourself.
This prompt works in any of the apps above:
Summarize this PDF
Summarize the attached PDF. Start with 3 sentences on what it’s about and who it’s for. Then list the 5 most important points, each with the page number where you found it. Then list anything I need to do, with any deadlines or amounts. If something isn’t in the document, say so instead of guessing.
Ask a specific question
Often you don’t need a full summary, just one answer. Ask the AI to quote the document so you can see where the answer came from:
Answer from the PDF only
Using only the attached PDF, answer this: [your question]. Quote the exact sentence you’re relying on and give its page number. If the PDF doesn’t answer it, tell me.
Very long PDFs
With a long document, a single summary can skip things. Get the map first, then go section by section:
Map a long document
This is a long document. First, give me a list of its sections with one line on what each covers and the page it starts on. Then wait, and I’ll tell you which sections to summarize in detail.
Explain the jargon
Find the 10 hardest terms in the attached PDF and explain each in one simple sentence, for someone outside this field. Include the page where each term first appears.
If the upload doesn’t work
Scanned PDF? If the pages are photos of paper, some apps can’t read the text. Try a screenshot of each page instead, or a scanner app that recognizes text.
File too big? Split it into parts, or copy and paste the text of the sections you need.
Locked PDF? If it needs a password, the app may not open it. Only remove a password on a file that’s yours.
Safety tips for PDFs
Think before you upload medical records, tax forms, bank statements or contracts with personal details. Check the app’s data settings, and remove pages you don’t need. See what not to share with AI.
Work documents: follow your employer’s AI policy before uploading anything confidential.
A summary isn’t advice. For legal, medical or financial documents, use the summary to know what to ask, then check the key points with a professional.
Yes, on most accounts. ChatGPT’s free plan lets you upload files, including PDFs, with daily limits. Gemini, Claude and Copilot also accept PDFs on their free plans, with limits that vary.
Open the ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot app, tap + or the paperclip, choose Files, pick the PDF, then paste the summary prompt from this guide.
For everyday documents like manuals, handbooks and reports, generally yes. Be careful with files that contain personal, medical, financial or confidential work information, and check the app’s privacy settings first.
Sometimes. Many apps can read text in images now, but results vary. If the summary looks wrong or empty, try clear screenshots of the pages or a scanner app that recognizes text.
AI can misread tables, skip sections in long files or fill gaps with guesses. Ask for page numbers and quotes, and check anything important against the document itself.
