Not sure what color to paint the living room or where the sofa should go? Take a photo, ask AI, and get fresh ideas in minutes before you spend a cent.
What AI can do for a room makeover
Many AI chat tools, including ChatGPT and Google Gemini, can look at a photo you upload and give suggestions: color schemes that work with your floors, ways to rearrange furniture, how to make a small room feel bigger, and budget-friendly finishing touches. Some can also create a picture of how a redesigned room might look. Free plans usually have daily limits on photo uploads and new images.
Keep expectations realistic. AI doesn’t know your exact measurements, and generated pictures are an impression, not a blueprint. Use it for inspiration and planning, then measure, sample, and decide for yourself.
Get decorating ideas in five steps
1
Tidy the frame, not the room
Take one or two photos in daylight from a corner so most of the room is visible. Before you snap, move mail, family photos, and anything with your address or personal details out of view.
2
Measure the basics
Note the room’s length and width, ceiling height if you know it, and the size of big furniture you’re keeping. AI can’t measure from a photo reliably.
3
Upload and describe
Add the photo (tap + or the attach button), then say what you want: the feel, what’s staying, your budget, and who uses the room.
4
Ask for options
Ask for 2 or 3 different directions, and then go deeper on the one you like.
5
Turn ideas into a plan
Ask for a shopping list with rough price ranges, and an order of jobs (paint first, then rugs, then accessories).
Decorating ideas from my photo
Here's a photo of my [living room / bedroom]. It's about [length] by [width] feet. I'm keeping [sofa / bed / rug]. I'd like it to feel [cozy / brighter / calmer / less cluttered]. My budget is about [amount]. Give me 3 different decorating ideas, each with a color scheme, one furniture change, and 3 finishing touches.
More prompts for common room problems
Rearrange my furniture
My room is [length] by [width] feet with a door on [which wall] and a window on [which wall]. I have [list furniture with rough sizes]. Suggest 2 layouts that make the room easier to walk through, and describe each one in plain words.
Pick a paint color
Looking at this photo, suggest 3 wall colors that would go with my [floor / sofa / curtains]. For each, tell me the mood it creates and what type of lighting it suits. Remind me to test paint samples on the wall first.
Make a small room feel bigger
This room feels cramped. Based on the photo, give me 5 low-cost ideas to make it feel more open, starting with the cheapest and easiest.
Shopping list on a budget
Turn the idea we chose into a shopping list with rough price ranges at budget and mid-range levels. Mark which items are optional. Don't name specific stores or prices as facts; label them as estimates.
If you’d like to see a new look, you can ask a tool that creates images: “Create an image of this room with [the changes we discussed].” Results vary, and the image may change details of your room, so use it as a mood board.
Check the background. Photos can reveal more than you think: mail, documents, family photos, a house number through the window, or valuables. Move or crop them out.
Consider location data. Many phones can attach location information to photos. If your phone offers a share option to remove location, use it. When in doubt, take a screenshot of the photo and upload the screenshot instead. Screenshots don’t carry location data.
Leave people out of the photo, especially children, unless they’re happy to be included.
Big jobs need a pro. For anything involving electrical work, plumbing, removing walls, or mounting heavy items, AI ideas are a starting point. Talk to a qualified professional.
Check products yourself. AI may suggest items that don’t exist or prices that are out of date. Confirm sizes, prices, and reviews on the retailer’s own site.
Quick rule: AI for ideas, a tape measure for facts, and a paint sample before you buy a gallon.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. You can upload a photo and ask for ideas, and ChatGPT can also create images of a possible new look. Free plans have limits on uploads and image creation, and generated images are approximate, so treat them as inspiration rather than an exact plan.
The free versions of general AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini can give decorating ideas from a photo with the prompts above. Dedicated room-design apps also exist; check what they charge and what they do with your photos before uploading.
It can be, with care. Remove personal items and anything that shows your address, avoid including people, and consider removing location information. Don’t upload photos that show valuables, documents, or security systems.
The ideas can be genuinely helpful, but AI can misjudge sizes, colors, and lighting from a photo. Always measure, test paint samples, and check product dimensions before buying.
Use whichever you’re comfortable with. ChatGPT and Gemini can both look at photos and make suggestions. See our plain-English comparison.
