AI for Seniors: 10 Everyday Uses

You don't need to be a tech person to get real value from AI. Here are ten everyday uses, each with a prompt you can copy and paste.

Before you start

Any of the popular AI chat tools will work for these: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, or Microsoft Copilot. If you haven't tried one yet, our beginner's guide gets you set up in a few minutes. Many tools also let you speak instead of type, which can be easier on a phone or tablet. Look for a microphone icon.

Two quick rules apply to everything below: keep passwords, ID numbers, and account numbers out of the chat, and double-check anything important. Fill in the [brackets] in each prompt with your own details.

1. Make sense of confusing letters and forms

Insurance notices, utility bills, and official letters can be full of jargon. AI can translate them into plain English. Remove names and numbers first.

Explain a letter

Explain this letter in plain language. What is it about, do I need to do anything, and by when? List any words I should ask about.

[paste text with personal details removed]

2. Prepare for doctor's appointments

Appointments go quickly. AI can help you organize your thoughts and questions beforehand. It doesn't replace your doctor; it helps you make the most of your visit.

Appointment questions

I'm seeing my [type of doctor] about [general concern]. Help me write a short list of questions, most important first, and a simple way to describe my symptoms: when they started, how often, and what makes them better or worse.

3. Write letters, cards, and emails

From sympathy cards to a firm note to a company, AI helps you find the right words, which you can then make your own.

Card message

Write three short options for a [occasion] card to my [relationship]. A few details about them: [details]. Tone: [warm / gentle / funny]. Keep each under 60 words.

4. Stay close to grandchildren

Get ideas for activities, conversation starters, or ways to connect with kids and teens whose interests are new to you.

Connect with grandkids

My grandchild is [age] and loves [interests]. Suggest 5 activities we could do together [in person / over video call], plus a few conversation questions that don't feel like an interview.

5. Cook and plan meals

Adapt recipes for smaller portions, dietary needs, or what's already in the cupboard. For medical diets, follow your doctor's or dietitian's advice.

Adapt a recipe

Adapt this recipe to serve [2] and make it [lower in salt / easier to chew / dairy-free]. Keep it simple and list the changes you made.

[paste recipe]

6. Learn something new

Curious about history, birds, a new language, or how your phone works? AI is a patient tutor who never minds the same question twice.

Patient tutor

Teach me about [topic] in short, simple lessons. Start with the basics, check that I understood with one question, and wait for my answer before moving on.

7. Get help with technology

Ask how to do something on your phone, tablet, or computer, step by step. Tell it the device you have for clearer instructions.

Tech help

I have a [device, e.g. iPhone / Samsung tablet / Windows laptop]. Give me step-by-step instructions to [task, e.g. make the text bigger]. Use simple words and number each step.

8. Plan trips and outings

Plan a relaxed itinerary that suits your pace and interests, then confirm prices, opening hours, and accessibility details with official sources.

Relaxed trip plan

Plan a [number]-day trip to [place] for [who] in [month]. We prefer a relaxed pace, limited walking, and [interests]. Include rest time each day and remind me to check current hours and accessibility.

9. Organize medications, appointments, and to-dos

AI can turn a jumble of tasks into a tidy weekly checklist you can print. Don't use it to decide how or when to take medicine. That's for your doctor or pharmacist. It can help you lay out a schedule they've already given you.

Weekly checklist

Turn this list into a clear, printable weekly checklist with days across the top: [list of appointments, chores, and reminders as given by my doctor or family]. Use large, simple wording.

10. Write down your stories

Many people want to record family memories but don't know where to start. AI can interview you with gentle questions and help shape your answers into a story for the family.

Memoir interviewer

Act as a friendly interviewer helping me write down memories for my family. Ask me one question at a time about [my childhood / my first job / how I met my spouse]. After I answer a few, help me turn them into a short, readable story in my own voice.

A word on safety

Scammers sometimes target older adults with AI-generated messages and cloned voices. Pause on anything urgent that asks for money or codes, and verify with a number you already trust. Read how to spot AI scams and what not to share with AI.

Start with just one of these ten this week. Small, regular use builds confidence faster than trying everything at once.
